The Christian Education Department of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church was created for the promotion and supervision of the Christian training and development of the entire membership of the denomination.

Founded in 1887, the Christian Education Department (CED) of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church provides supervision, guidance, direction and programmatic support of the Christian training and nuture of children, youth, young adults and adults throughout the A.M.E. Christian Education supports Christian development in homes, churches, camps as well as church-related schools, colleges and seminaries.

The CED offers workshops, seminars, conferences and conventions that help develop effective skills in Christian Educators and those striving for a closer walk with the Lord. It also establishes curriculum and other standards to support Christian Education programs at every level of the church.

The department is organized into two divisions - the School and College Division and the Home and Church Division.

The Home and Church Division includes Varick's, Children and Youth Ministries; Adult Ministries, Young Adult Ministries; Adult Ministries and Church School Literature. The Church School Editorial Section includes Church School Literature and operates under the auspices of Home and Church Division of the Christian Education Department.

Bro. Lonnie Smith

Director of Adults/Superintendent of Sunday School

Bro. Lonnie Smith's duty shall be to unify, supervise, and promote the entire Christian Education work of Adults in the local church.

Bro Lonnie Smith's responsibility for the effectiveness of the School and the departments in meeting the prime objective of the Church School. This officer works cooperatively with the Pastor, Director of Christian Education, Board of Christian Education staff, teachers and other colleagues and see to it that the curriculum is adhered to as our literature directs.  He attends the meetings of the Board and makes a full report of the school's progress and its needs, supplies, personnel and equipment.

The Superintendent must keep on top of everything since he is responsible for the conduct of the school and all others under his supervision. It is an awesome charge but also much satisfaction and fun can be derived from the work.

At times, with limited resources, space and personnel, the Superintendent must improvise; keep the teachers encouraged and provide opportunities for advancement.  He must encourage learning and make room for developing skills, which may lie latent in teachers and pupils alike. The superintendent must work closely with the departmental heads in evaluating and preparing ideas and suggestions for the improvement of the work.
